I stumbled onto !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Russian blog of a guy helping his boss pull a Land Cruiser from a bottom of a lake. Naturally I had to translate.

One evening, I get a call from my !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! who tells me to drop everything tomorrow and come !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! a Cruiser that fell through the ice. I managed to drop everything only in time for dinner. Then an hour to pack and reanimate the truck which had a dead battery and was filled with summer diesel. I got to the spot only at 6 pm .

Preparatory work has been underway for a long time. The hole in the ice was cut and cleaned over the truck. Ramps were built from wood and stashed boards. Winch cable thrown over the steel tube and front of the truck is already raised from the bottom.
At the moment of drowning the winch cable was unwound and secured, which greatly helped with the task of extricating. Handbrake was also activated. (Other details are unknown).

Front is lifted, pushing ramps under the front wheels:

When we arrived on the scene, it was -21 outside. By nightfall already under -26. Yesterday the ice was visibly thinner..

Front wheels of Cruiser are already on ramps:

Start to slowly pull the winch, giving the water time to drain from the rising car:

Night fell and in 4x4 country work began)
And here is a locked wheel (car in in park, yeah) breaking the ramp. Well, the best option would've been logs 20 cm in diameter. But here is all that was available at the closest store. The wood was covered in branches, we had to break it twice more, by hand:

In comes the Big Iron Tripod:

Because of a broken ramp the truck is slightly skewed. We has to widen hole in the ice and dig out the truck by hand. Lost a bunch of extra time on this:

Metal pipe takes place of broken ramp. We cut the ice so the tire wouldn't stop on the edge of the ice hole and slowly continue to raise the car:

Releasing driver releasing parking brake:

And almost instantly the truck rolls easily onto the ice:

Kinja'd!!!

Hooray! The truck is raised. But the ice is cracking significantly all around and the water is starting to appear all around. The truck needs to be pulled quickly to shore:

Night view from the shore:

We began winching somewhere around six in the evening , and around ten the truck was already on top of the ice. Long, thin and breakable pieces of wood added a lot of extra time.

UPD: from the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! :

Truck was pulled out and got sent to thaw. Many thanks to all participants ! :-)

So you don't repeat the mistakes of others:

Volodya hired a driving instructor , to learn driving driving on icy road. The Instructor brought him there, at that's where the ice track is. Initially they drove a sporty Mitsubishi and everything was fine. But the goal was to learn on the Cruiser, the result it above.

Thickness of ice isof about 20 cm.

Also for the Muscovites, there is an ice track on the Moscow River near M9 to Krasnogorsk - Discovery drowned there. They pulled it out yesterday.

UPD2: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! - in the spot of the incident (turn) the ice was worn down ( very aggressively ) with spiked tires down to a thickness of 10-15 cm

Organizers should've filled such places with water to compensate for wear. And it would be best of all if the whole track was sprayed with, as is done in ice crossings.

By my calculations the ice was fit - 20-25 cm.

many sources write:

5 cm - person

15 cm - small car

25 cm - SUV

the easiest and most affordable method is proposed by M. Korunova :

P = h2 / 100,

where P - maximum weight in tonnes , which can withstand this ice sheet , h - ice thickness in centimeters , but no less than 20-25 cm

And what do they plan to do with the car? I certainly hope they don't try to repair it and pass it off as "minor flood damage".

When a car's completely submerged, the entire thing surely must ruined. The only things I can see worth salvaging are the wheels and tires, and some body panels, and maybe some glass.

That depends if it's salt water or not. If it's not salt water it can be dried off. Most fabric is just but the rest should be usable.

I have to imagine fully submerging a running engine in water for hours (obviously not running at that point) would ruin it to a hunk of scrap.

If a Hilux can survive an overnight stay in saltwater, I'm pretty sure a Land Cruiser will...cruise through this ordeal :P
